A Brief History of Canada:
Canada is a part of North America, bordering Alaska to the
Northwest, the United States to the South, the Atlantic Ocean
to the East and the Pacific Ocean to the West. Less than 150
years ago, Canada belonged to Great Britain. Over a period
of many years, British settlers in Canada through diplomatic
and gradual change negotiated and formed a constitution. On
July 1, 1867, the British government, ruled by Queen Victoria,
signed these documents creating this new independent nation,
which is known today as Canada with the city of Ottawa being
named as the Capital. However as a condition, the new Canadians
had to agree to remain loyal to Britain and the Queen.
At that time, Canada was called the Dominion of Canada. It
consisted of only four provinces. (Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia,
and New Brunswick) Today, the country consists of 10 provinces
and 3 territories. The Canadian Head of State is known as
the Prime Minister. The government operates under a democratically
elected House of Commons and an appointed Senate. This means
that the people of Canada publicly elect a leader to represent
them, one voice speaking for an entire nation.
The word 'Canada' originates from the Native American word
'Kanata' meaning 'village'. However Canada is far from being
the size of a village; it is rather a vast and beautiful land
full of wildlife living in harmony among a mostly natural
environment and it is the second largest country in the world
regarding land mass. The Canadian urban setting is divided
among seven larger cities with an intercity population of
more than 500,000 people. Due to the extreme cold weather
in the northern parts of the country the population is sparse,
and roughly 33 million citizens reside throughout Canada.
